long road home

It's been quite some time since my last post. I've been meaning to upload images form Tahoe, and now Alaska, but it all seems so distant when looking back. As I sit here now, I think of the paper I should have written, the final I should have scheduled, and phone call I should have made, the shoot I should have confirmed, the money I shouldn't have spent, the promises I shouldn't have made...

I've taken some time off from life to go and live for a while. I've been in Alaska for a few weeks now, it was the best birthday present I could
have asked for. Next month I'll be with my family in Chicago. Although I'm surrounded by love and support, and I'm doing exactly what I set out to do, and I'm happy, I'm also incredibly lonely. I look at the handful of images I set out to post over the past months, and all I can think of is how they don't reflect what I see at all. The issues I have tackled this year personally, professionally, and academically haven't been reflected in my public contributions. I mean, props to my husband who has been the outlet for my passionate outbursts when being on either side of the lens just doesn't do it and what I end up sharing just skims the surface of w
hat I want to scream to the world!

Until my next post, I'm going to focus on capturing my experiences as an observer of myself, not looking back at what I want to capture, what I can't hold onto, what I don't have the ability to do, and just make every moment count. I hope my next upload
s will reflect the moments I've been experiencing, not my conscious self trying to alter my images to hide their impact on my life.

Smoke and Mirrors: for my first trick...I mean post

It's taken me forever to get this blog of the ground. I love to write, only slightly less than I love ranting about things that no one really wants to hear, so I thought this would be the perfect medium for me, but with the start of school, I've had little to no time to embellish anything blog-worthy. Then I find tumblr. the easy way to blog, and a slue of other random sites like google's new Buzz and/or Reader, and lets not forget the ever popular flikr (whose upload time I am just NOT diggin' on). Regardless, I thought it best to use this blog to really invite you into my world as a student, as a baker, as a model, as a photographer, as a muse, as a writer, as a wife, as a human.
Last week I went hiking with Tom, and was able to play with the settings on my camera and get some content for class, as well as for this site. With this image, and the two proceeding it, I wanted to capture the light on a cloudy day. I know they are exposed a bit dark, and I rather like it that way. Anyone who has shot me as a model knows my affinity for those high contrast images ;) I should also add, none of these images I have posted today have been altered in any way.

The weather was moving rapidly around us, making us not only wet, but also altering the light quite a bit. My environment was literally changing faster than I could navigate around. I'm sure once I get better acquainted with the camera I'm using, I'll be able to change the settings with precision, rather than bumbling around, chasing clouds.

The evening before our hike, we attended the First Friday Art Walk in San Jose, and I was able to shoot a bit of my friend's band, Corpus Colossus. These images were more difficult, in retrospect, because of the crowd. I wasn't able to move around and get very many interesting angles, and was overall disappointed with the quality. Bryan commented that the white balance was off, but he's also red/green colorblind and the stage was in fact red. After he took the camera to adjust the WB, I took several more images and decided that he was in fact a lunatic, and the auto WB function was giving me better images.

This upcoming weekend, I have a photo project to work on: To take 75 images of a familiar envoirnment/activity and to take 75 images of a foreign environment/activity. I haven't decided what to do to capture familiarity, but I am going skiing in Tahoe for the foreign experience. As I've never been to Tahoe, and I've never been skiing before, I thought it a good experience to capture on camera. Probably cliche in the world of photography, but a risk I'm willing to assume never the less ;)
